Woman Buys Old Jacket at Thrift Shop and Finds Note in Pocket Pleading, ‘Help My Grandkids’ — Story of the Day

Megan discovered a note in the pocket of a thrift store jacket she bought, which read, “Help my grandkids,” along with an address. Unable to shake the message from her mind, she decided to visit the address, unsure of what she would find.

Arriving at the house, Megan was surprised when a little girl answered the door. The child led her inside, where two more kids waited in a cluttered, unkempt home. The house was not dirty, but it was clear it hadn’t been tidied in a while. Realizing the note was not a prank, Megan asked to see their grandmother.

The children took her to an older woman named Erica, who was bedridden and appeared very ill. Erica explained between coughs that she had chemical pneumonia and no family to help. She had sold the jacket for food and left the note out of desperation to protect her grandchildren from ending up in the foster system.

Megan introduced herself and assured Erica that things would be alright. While the kids helped with simple tasks, Megan tidied the house, cleaned the kitchen, and ordered them a pizza. She researched remedies to ease Erica’s cough and prepared a soothing drink from what was available.

Megan continued visiting daily, helping the family until Erica’s health improved. Soon, Erica was back on her feet and deeply grateful. “You could’ve called CPS, but you chose to help us instead,” Erica said, hugging Megan. “I can’t thank you enough.”

Megan replied, “Sometimes, we all need a little help. Next time, call me instead of leaving a note in a jacket.” They laughed together, forming a close friendship despite their age difference. Megan often shared the story with anyone who would listen.
